The ADC Renaissance Nobody Saw Coming
Look, I’ll be straight with you. When I first read these patch notes, I thought Riot had lost their minds. Buffing Jinx’s rocket range by 25 units? Giving Aphelios back his early game damage? After months of watching ADCs get dunked on by assassins, supports, jungle camps, and occasionally their own minions, this felt like throwing a band-aid on a broken arm.
But here’s the thing that’s got me absolutely buzzing after a week of testing. This isn’t just number tweaks. The meta shift is real, and it’s beautiful. Bot lane actually matters again. I’ve watched Silver players start respecting their ADCs, and I’ve seen Platinum supports remember they can peel instead of trying to make the next highlight reel. When a Jinx can actually threaten your backline from 650 range instead of 625, suddenly those teamfight positioning mistakes hurt way more.
The Aphelios changes are the real sleeper hit though. His early lethality scaling got bumped from 0.4 to 0.6 total AD, which sounds tiny until you realize he can actually trade in lane now. No more watching your ADC farm under tower for 15 minutes while the enemy bot lane takes three plates and your jungle camps.
Tank Junglers Are Back (Sort Of)
Sejuani’s getting banned in half my games now, and honestly? Good. The armor scaling buffs on her W and the reduced cooldown on her ultimate means she’s finally the frontline menace she was meant to be. But here’s what the patch notes don’t tell you. This isn’t Season 6 tank meta all over again. The damage in this game is still insane. Sejuani is strong because she can survive long enough to actually use her kit, not because she’s an unkillable raid boss.
Zac’s bounce mechanic changes are way more impactful than people realize. The reduced charge time on his E means he’s not telegraphing ganks from three zip codes away. I’ve seen jungle mains who dropped him months ago suddenly remembering why they loved this green blob. The counterplay is still there, but now it requires actual awareness instead of just casually walking away when you see him charging up.
Here’s the reality check though. If you’re not comfortable with macro play and objective control, tank junglers are going to feel awful. You can’t just farm to six items anymore. These champions demand you understand when to engage, when to peel, and how to set up your team for success. Don’t pick Sejuani because she’s strong. Pick her because you want to learn how to jungle properly.
The Assassin Nerfs Nobody Asked For (But Desperately Needed)
Katarina losing 10 base damage on her Q sounds like nothing until you realize that’s 40 less damage in a standard combo by level 9. Zed’s W shadow duration dropping from 5 seconds to 4.5 seconds means his escape windows are tighter. These aren’t game-breaking nerfs, but they’re surgical strikes at the exact pain points that made these champions frustrating to play against.
What I love about these changes is they don’t gut the champions for their mains. A good Katarina player will still delete your team if you clump up like penguins. A skilled Zed will still find those pick opportunities. But the margin for error is smaller now. The Bronze Katarina who just button mashes in teamfights? She’s going to struggle. The Zed who uses his shadow aggressively and forgets about positioning? He’s getting punished.
This is how you balance assassins correctly. You don’t remove their identity or make them useless. You make them require actual skill and game knowledge instead of just stat-checking squishier targets.
Support Changes That Actually Support
The Thresh buffs are chef’s kiss perfect. Increasing his Q hitbox by just 5 units doesn’t sound like much, but every Thresh player knows that feeling when your hook grazes someone’s model and doesn’t connect. This change eliminates about 80% of those “that should have hit” moments without making the ability oppressive.
Leona’s E damage increase is the real winner though. She can actually threaten carries again instead of just being a walking crowd control bot. The 20 additional base damage at max rank means she’s contributing real threat in teamfights. Support players have been asking for agency, and this delivers without breaking the role’s identity.
But let’s talk about what didn’t get changed. Yuumi is still Yuumi. Lulu is still making ADCs unkillable while providing more utility than some mid laners. If you’re looking for dramatic support meta shifts, you’re going to be disappointed. These changes enhance existing viable picks rather than creating new ones.
Why This Patch Actually Gets It Right
Here’s what I respect about Patch 13.4. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead of massive overhauls that break everything for three weeks while they hotfix the disasters, we got targeted adjustments that address specific pain points. Bot lane agency improved without making ADCs overpowered. Tanks can actually tank without becoming damage sponges. Assassins still assassinate but require more skill.
The meta feels healthier because multiple strategies work again. I’ve seen successful games with pick comps, teamfight comps, split push comps, and even some creative siege strategies. When the patch first dropped, I was skeptical about the conservative approach. Two weeks later, I’m convinced this is exactly what the game needed.
What’s your take on the new meta? Are you feeling the ADC buffs in your games, or are you still getting dove by three people every teamfight? Drop your experiences in the comments because I’m genuinely curious how these changes are playing out across different ranks and regions.
